Károly (Carl) Goldmark (1830-1915), son of a Jewish cantor, displayed remarkable aptitude for music as a young child. After years of intensive violin studies in Sopron, he left Hungary to find employment in Vienna. Playing in theatre orchestras financed composition lessons, and the 1865 première of his concert overture Sakuntala, op.13 by the Vienna Philharmonic launched Goldmark’s career as an orchestral composer.
Based on an ancient, seven-act drama by the Indian poet Kalidasa, Sakuntala (ipa [ʃəˈkʊn təˌlɑ]) portrays a young woman’s travels through an exotic landscape as full of magic and beauty as betrayal and grief.
